It starts in Bakersfield.
Every year, for the last 40 years, the nitro faithful have come to this lonely outpost for their annual wake-up call.
This year is no different.

I made the regular flight in from Seattle to Burbank, and got in the rent-a-ride to go over the Grapevine to this holiest of dragstrips, Famoso Raceway.

This year there was a little different tone to the race, as the owner of the WW2 AA/FD, Jim Herbert, had died 10 days before the race, and his driver, Jim Murphy, and the crew decided rather than sit it out, that they'd run that weekend. They figured that Herbert would have wanted that, and his widow agreed that's what Jim would have wanted. The other partner in the operation, Ted Taylor, wasn't as sure, and kept a pretty low profile that weekend.
